LONG BEACH'S HISTORY AT A GLANCE

    • Before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century, present-day Long Beach was inhabited by several groups of indigenous cultures. The Tongva people was considered the most dominant group out of all indigenous tribes, as they had at least three major settlements within the area.
  •
  • In 1784, the present-day area that is now Long Beach was granted to a Spanish soldier named Manuel Nieto by King Carlos III as part of a massive land grant. It included the historic Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos, its sister rancho.
  •
  • Rancho Los Cerritos was sold in 1866 to Llewellyn Bixby, and was eventually placed under the management of his brother, Jotham. The purchase of Rancho Los Cerritos was a significant point in the Bixby family’s early real estate career, helping them build their reputation as prominent developers and ranchers in Long Beach.
  •
  • In 1882, the development of Long Beach as a city was started by developer William Willmore. It was originally planned as “Willmore City,” which was eventually changed by its residents to “Long Beach” during the city’s incorporation in 1888.
  •
  • The arrival of the Pacific Electric trolley in 1902 spurred the growth of Long Beach as both a resort destination and a bustling commercial center, helping it become one the fastest growing cities in the U.S. by 1910.
  •
  • In 1967, the city of Long Beach purchased the Queen Mary, a former luxury cruise liner. It is now permanently docked in Long Beach Harbor, and is one of the city’s premier hotels and tourist attractions.
